What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, also known as cosmetic eyelift surgery, is the most common cosmetic procedure eyelid expert Dr. Massry performs in Beverly Hills. Blepharoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that rejuvenates the appearance of the eyes. Surgery can be performed under minimal sedation or local injections of anesthesia. Although blepharoplasty is a relatively straightforward procedure, it is still a surgical intervention, which requires a specialist to attain the desired results.
Though blepharoplasty is a commonly performed procedure by many surgeons and is widely considered a simple excision of skin and fat from the upper and/or lower lids by most cosmetic surgeons, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Eyelid lift surgery requires a unique understanding of eyelid anatomy. Removing too much skin, muscle or fat can lead to devastating results. A well-experienced blepharoplasty surgeon, like Dr. Massry, is able to preserve (reposition) fat, form a natural lid fold (crease), elevate a weakened eyelid muscle (ptosis repair), tighten the outer corner of the eyelids (canthoplasty), and have an overall understanding of what beautiful eye looks like.

With age, the eyelids begin to sag and droop as a result of:
- Loss of tone
- Loss of elasticity & collagen
- Loss of support (underlying bone support)
- Loss of facial fat
The combination of one or more of these factors can result in droopy or puffy looking eyelids, as well as under eye hollows or heavy bags. Depending on which aging issues are affecting the appearance of your eyelids, Dr. Massry will determine which eyelid treatments will give you the best results. Dr. Massry may recommend both an upper and lower blepharoplasty, or he may determine that you need just one of the two procedures. During your consultation with Dr. Massry he will listen to your goals for cosmetic eyelid surgery, as well as examine your eyelids, in order to recommend the best procedure plan for you.
An upper blepharoplasty, or upper cosmetic eyelid surgery, lifts the upper eyelid so that your eyes appear more vibrant and youthful. Some patients need upper blepharoplasty improve their vision because the eyelids begin to droop so much that it obstructs their field of view.
A lower blepharoplasty, or lower cosmetic eyelid surgery, is a surgery to reduce the prominence of under eye bags, while also filling in hollows under the eyes (ie. dark circles) with volume, generally using fat. When Dr. Massry performs a lower blepharoplasty, rather than removing precious eyelid fat, he actually relocates the excess fat to the hollows to reduce elevations (fat prominence) and fill depressions (eyelid hollows). This technique smoothes the contour irregularities and re-creates the natural contours of a youthful eye.
Initial healing after blepharoplasty surgery can include some swelling, bruising, irritation or dry eyes, and minimal discomfort. For the first 48 hours following surgery, you should apply cold compresses to the eyelids for 10 minutes every hour when you are awake to help manage and minimize any swelling, bruising and discomfort.
It is usually safe to return to your regular daily activities the day following surgery, however you should avoid working out and any strenuous activities until after your follow-up examination.
During your pre-op appointment with Dr. Massry you will receive more detailed instructions on how to take care of your eyelids after surgery
